- THIS EPOXY THICKENING ADDITIVE controls the viscosity of the epoxy. It prevents epoxy runoff in vertical and overhead joints. This very strong filler creates a smooth epoxy mixture ideal for general epoxy bonding and filleting. It is also our most versatile epoxy filler. Can be combined with other fillers to improve strength, abrasion resistance, and consistency, resulting in a tougher, smoother surface.
- CAN BE COMBINED with other fillers to improve strength, abrasion resistance, and consistency, or to adust color. Thickened with 406 filler alone, epoxy becomes translucent white. This nicely offsets the darkening effect of sanding dust or other fillers, allowing you to achieve a color match. Compare it to the finished surface you’re trying to match, and allow a small test amount to cure in order to determine the final color.
- FOR MAXIMUM STRENGTH add only enough filler to completely bridge gaps between surfaces without sagging or running out of the joint or gap. A small amount should squeeze out of the joints when clamped. For thick mixtures, don’t fill the mixing cup more than 1/3 full of epoxy before adding filler.
- THE AMOUNT OF FILLER you add controls epoxy's viscosity. There is no strict formula, just use your eye to judge what consistency will work best for the job at hand. The chart below offers guidelines to the differences between neat (unthickened) epoxy and three popular consistencies of thickened epoxy: "catsup," "mayonnaise," and "peanut butter."
- FOR CONSISTENCY across a project that calls for several batches of epoxy that's thickened to the same degree, you can create your own epoxy/filler "recipe." Carefully measure the amount of filler you add to the first epoxy batch until it reaches the viscosity you need, keeping track of the total amount you've added. Mix the same amounts of resin, hardener, and filler for the remaining batches so they all have the same viscosity.
