The Blu-ray release of Special Effects by Olive Films includes subtitles, audio commentary, and good specs. The film is an unusual thriller about an egotistical filmmaker whose career is in decline after making a flop. The murder of an actor is filmed for use in his next project, and her boyfriend becomes the prime suspect. The director decides to make a movie about the crime, and the actual footage is incorporated. The film has fascinating elements, including the concept of a killer using a real-life murder and hiding it within a fictional narrative. While the performances are uneven, Eric Bogosian is excellent as the megalomaniacal director. The Blu-ray transfer has a Consistently sharp image with plenty of bright, popping colours. The audio commentary with director Larry Cohen is insightful, and he shares many details about the production itself. Overall, the film may not be perfectly executed, but it is worth picking up for fans of Larry Cohen's work or the genre.
