Yapıtlarında hep birtakım değişik anlatım biçimleri deneyen Faulkner, Çılgın Palmiyeler ve Irmak Baba başlıklı bu öyküleri tek bir romanın parçaları gibi tasarlamış, bölümlerini dönüşümlü biçimde sıralamıştır. Bu plan uyarınca kitap, Çılgın Palmiyelerin ilk bölümüyle başlar, arkasından Irmak Babadaki adsız mahkumun öyküsünün ilk bölümü gelir; üçüncü bölümde Harry ile Charlotteun öyküsü devam eder; dördüncü bölüm, yeniden mahkumun başından geçenleri anlatır; bundan sonraki bölümler de aynı biçimde sıralanır 1939da yayımlanan bu benzersiz romanı için Faulkner şöyle diyor: Çılgın Palmiyelerin ilk bölümünü bitirir bitirmez, bir şeylerin eksik kaldığını, öykünün pekiştirilmesi, müzikteki kontrpuan benzeri bir yöntemle güçlendirilmesi gerektiğini gördüm. Bunun üzerine, Çılgın Palmiyelerdeki öykü yeniden canlanıncaya kadar Irmak Babayı yazdım. Derken, Irmak Babanın birinci bölümünün sonuna gelince, onu bırakıp Çılgın Palmiyelere döndüm ve gene gücünü yitirmeye başlayıncaya kadar yazmaya devam ettim.
