- Horace Walpole (1717-1797): İngiliz sanat tarihçisi, yazar ve Oxford kontu. Başbakan Robert Walpole'un oğlu olarak dünyaya geldi. En önemli eserleri Historic Doubts Upon The Life and Death of Richard III III. Richard'ın Hayatı ve Ölümüne Dair Tarihi Kuşkular ve Otranto Şatosu'dur. Yazar olarak ününü ise 1798'te yayımlanmaya başlayan mektuplarına borçludur. İlk kez 1764 yılında yayımlanan Otranto Şatosu, genellikle ilk Gotik roman olarak kabul edilir. Edebiyata Gotik romana özgü rüya, gizli geçitler, hayaletler vb. unsurları katan bu eser, korku ve esrarı bir araya getirerek yepyeni bir gelenek yaratmış, başta Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker ve Matthew Lewis olmak üzere kendisinden sonra gelen Gotik edebiyat kuşağını derinden etkilemiştir.
