Yanına gelene kadar geçtiği yerlerde kimsenin göremediğini görüp kimsenin anlatamadığı gibi anlatan bu gençten hoşlanan Ulu Kağan, devletinin vergilerini tahsil etmekle ve imparatorluğunu gezip izlenimlerini anlatmakla görevlendirerek onu yıllarca yanında tuttu.Bakış açısı sınırlı bir yeniyetme olarak yola çıkan Marco Polo, gezdiği yerlerde türlü türlü coğrafya ve iklimlerle, çeşit çeşit kavim ve dillerle, çoğu kendisine tuhaf gelen farklı iman ve ibadetlerle, garipsediği gelenek ve göreneklerle karşılaştı.
