Werner Bräunig bu metinde, İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında Demokratik Alman Cumhuriyeti’nin kuruluş sancılarını, Doğu Almanya’daki Wismut uranyum madeninde çalışan işçilerin gündelik hayatlarına odaklanarak resmeder. Hem savaşın yıkıntıları arasında hem de kalkınma yarışı sırasında yaşamak zorunda kalan bu insanlar, Nazi rejiminin baskısına, İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nın dehşetine ve bir türlü oturmayan Doğu Bloğu sistemine tanıklık ettikleri için üç kez tarihin kurbanı olurlar. Panayır Yeri’nde bu mağduriyetin yarattığı hoşnutsuzluğun önce protestolara, sonra ayaklanmalara, sonunda ise kanlı bir askeri müdahaleye evrilmesini sıradan insanların perspektifinden tüm gerçekliğiyle yansıtan Bräunig, edebi cüretinin bedelini kariyeriyle öder: Doğu Almanya’da hiçbir zaman yayımlanamayan ve ikinci cildi yazılamayan roman Sosyalist Birlik Partisi tarafından “düşmanca” bulunur ve metne yöneltilen eleştiriler bir parti kampanyasına bürünür. Bu ortamda giderek gözden düşen Bräunig alkol bağımlılığı sonucu kırk iki yaşında hayata veda eder.
